After last week’s postponed match and the DFB-Cup game on Tuesday, it was finally time for another Region League Northeast matchday for FC Viktoria on Saturday! As the clear favourites, the sky-blue team travelled to face Magdeburger FFC. Seventh against second, this should be straightforward, right?
Magdeburg’s Goalkeeper Saves Penalty
On the pitch, it was, but unfortunately not on the scoreboard for a long time. This, despite Viktoria having an early golden opportunity to take the lead, when Nina Ehegötz was fouled in the penalty area, no doubt about it, a penalty was awarded. However, the strong Florentine Rudloff saved the penalty kick.
Even before that, Selina Grosch had hit the crossbar, and it continued similarly throughout the first half. Viktoria dominated the game, spending almost all their time in the opponents' half, but couldn't get the ball into the net. Chances came almost by the minute. Carol Cazares’ cross was intercepted by Rudloff (19'), Kim Urbanek shot over the bar from close range (20'), Ehegötz’s long-range effort also went over (21'), and Anna Höfker hit the crossbar with a header (29').
Viktoria Dominates, Magdeburg Only Threatens Late In The First Half
It wasn’t until the end of the first half that Magdeburg showed any signs of life. Kira Bölke twice ran towards Viktoria's goal, but first Höfker defended well and Inga Buchholz secured the ball, after that it was Vanessa Lux who won a key tackle.
At half-time, coach Dennis Galleski made an offensive change, Danya Barsalona replaced Cazares. Viktoria’s attacks became more focused, and shortly after the restart, Ehegötz broke the deadlock with the long-awaited 1-0 (48’). Dribbling from the left side of the box, she moved centrally and fired a beautiful shot from around 15 meters.
Urbanek Seals The Win
Viktoria continued to create numerous chances, and while Magdeburg put up a good fight, they couldn't muster any significant offensive threats of their own. Nina Ehegötz (57'), Katja Friedl (60'), Danya Barsalona (78', 82', 88'), and Stefanie Gerken (80') all had more chances, but it was Urbanek who, shortly before the final whistle, erased any doubts by scoring the 2-0 goal to seal the victory (85').
A bitter moment, however, came when Anna Höfker collided with an opponent just minutes before the second goal and had to be substituted (73'). Get well soon!
In the chilly conditions of Magdeburg, Viktoria secured a 2-0 victory, maintaining their position in second place in the League. Union Berlin remains top of the table, six points ahead. Viktoria has one more league match to play this year. A rescheduled match against 1. FFV Erfurt on Saturday, 9th December at 11 a.m. at Stadion Lichterfelde.
But first, on Saturday, 25th November, FC Viktoria faces Carl Zeiss Jena from the 2nd Bundesliga in the DFB-Cup Round of 16. Come in numbers and support the team in their potential bid to reach the quarter finals!
