On Sunday, March 3rd, our Viktoria kicks off the second half of the 2023/24 season! We’re starting with an away game in Potsdam against Turbine Iim so it’s the perfect time for a mid-season/winter break review and a look ahead.
How The First Half Went
Due to various postponements and the cancellation of the game against 1. FFV Erfurt, it’s been quite a while since our last league match. That was, of course, the highlight of the DFB-Pokal match against Carl-Zeiss Jena. Unfortunately, Viktoria lost 1-3, marking the end of our cup run in the round of 16, but it was an incredible experience nonetheless.
Our last match in the Region League Nportheast took place even longer ago: more than three months back, the Sky Blues (Himmelblauen) travelled to Magdeburg and fought for a 2-0 victory. That was one of eight wins in the first half of the season, though we also suffered two defeats. Those losses came against our biggest city rivals, Union Berlin and Hertha BSC. However, thanks to the forfeited game by Erfurt, we’ve been awarded a ninth win “at the green table” (via default). This puts us in second place on the table, two points ahead of Carl-Zeiss Jena II. Only Union Berlin is ahead, with a six-point lead. The Köpenick side didn’t drop a single point in the first half of the season.
What Happened During The Winter Break
Since the league has shrunk by two teams compared to last season, the winter break was longer than it was in 2022/23. There were some changes during this time at Viktoria: Stefanie Klug has left the club to join Jena in the second division, and Selma Barth is no longer with the club either. We wish them both the best of luck on their future journeys!
On the other hand, we welcome new signing Leyila Aydin to Lichterfelde. Her dynamism and pace are expected to bring extra energy to our attack. We’re excited to have her!
Leyila has already shown her potential during our training camp and in friendly matches: the team spent six days under the Turkish sun in Antalya, focusing on tactical development. While the friendly against Carl-Zeiss Jena at the end of January ended in a 0-3 defeat, Viktoria secured a 2-1 victory over Pogon Szczecin, the leaders of the Polish top league, on Saturday, February 24th.
What’s Ahead Of Us In The Second Half
We’re kicking off the second half of the season with a busy week. On Sunday, March 3rd, we travel to Potsdam to face sixth-placed Turbine II. Five wins, five losses, one draw, it couldn’t be more balanced. In the first leg, Viktoria claimed a clear 3-0 victory under sunny skies.
